“Boredom is useful to me when I notice it and think: Oh, I’m bored; there must be something else I want to be doing … boredom acts as an initiator of originality by pushing me into new activities or new thoughts.” – Hugh Prather
Have you ever looked at boredom as being “useful,” or realized it as a powerful, intuitive indicator in your life?
Probably not.
When we’re feeling bored, we usually just mope around, aware that we are bored, but not giving it any further thought. Boredom is so much more than that. It is, in reality, a form of Divine guidance – a strong push from the Infinite to get you to move to a different place … one that is better suited to you.
It is like a gigantic billboard screaming for you to change directions, with multi-colored flags hanging from it, right in front of your face that, unfortunately, you somehow manage not to see. Yes, you know that you are bored, but you miss the signal.
Boredom is not a state to just wander around in until something else happens to come along to engage your life force. No, it is a prod from a higher source – designed and intended to be an initiator of “new activities and new thoughts.”
It doesn’t matter if it is a very small thing, like “not having anything to do” on a Wednesday night, or something bigger, like being bored with your profession, or worse, your life in general. Boredom is a huge dragon, whose presence blocks the sun, and holds you in an inertia of death-like stillness. It is a life-stealer.
Whenever boredom arrives, it is a signal to seek. Life is NOT boring; it is a non-stop sequence of moments for you to create – exciting, mystical, mysterious, and constantly changing. If boredom is being experienced, it isn’t because there is “nothing to do,” it is because YOU are boring, failing to hear the clarion call of Creation to seek and “initiate” a new experience. As the late, great Norman Mailer wrote, “Boredom slays more of existence than war.”
That, my friends, is the truth.
So, lay aside your fears and the “status quo” mentality that binds you to drudgery. Listen to and act on boredom’s message, and allow it to push you into new and uncharted waters. THAT is living!
Many Blessings To All…
