Of the several definitions for the word “holy,” there are two that are particularly pertinent to this post:
1. connected to the Divine
2. venerated as sacred
It is commonly presumed among most individuals that it is the Creator, or God, that makes something holy, but that isn’t the case. It is YOU that makes that determination. Acknowledging this in no way removes the Divine from the process, but it points out the reality that it is you that decides what facilitates your connection to that power.
Your faith and what you believe about an object, or a place, or a written text’s relationship to the Creator is what makes it sacred – what separates it and marks it as holy. The Infinite power that is God will honor whatever you have chosen [be aware, however, that if what you have chosen is hurtful or corrupt, the great wheel of karma will, without malice, do as it must and run over you].
Therefore, if the mountain is holy to you, God will meet you there. Likewise, if you believe that the scriptures of a particular religion, or a special stone in your pocket, hold an intimate relationship with and/or embody the Divine, then your belief makes those things holy and Creation will connect with you through them as well.
This isn’t as strange an idea as it may at first seem when you realize that Creation is EVERYWHERE, and in all things. This is easily observed within the myriad religions and spiritual paths that exist today, (and have existed in the past). Each has its own belief of what is holy, and in each of them God works in their midst and honors their faith. Just as “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” “holy is in the heart of the believer.”
In closing, I want to point out how very helpful I believe it is that you do have something that is holy and/or sacred to you. The strength that such things can bring into your day-to-day life is too often underestimated.
Having something that is sacred and holy to you will provide a physical focal point for your mind and spirit, and will serve you in deepening your relationship with the Divine in an intimate and empowering way. If you don’t have that special “something,” then I encourage you to meditate/pray about finding it, and then follow where you are led. When you are given it, you will have a powerful ally in your spiritual walk.
